Contamination assessment of a freely expanding green propellant thruster plume

چکیده
Abstract A number of propellant/thruster combinations are under development in recent years that aim to replace the prevailing hydrazine-driven reaction control thrusters with less hazardous substances (“green propellants”). With some these systems already orbit, characterizing their contamination potential a space environment becomes relevant. In this paper we discuss experiments on plume induced from novel propene/nitrous oxide bipropellant thruster, including high-speed imaging, SEM-EDS analysis, QCM measurements and in-situ mass spectrometry. Additional combustion chamber pressure complement overall characterization thruster performance high vacuum environment. The main findings exploratory study strong indications solid liquid phase particles being ejected nozzle, which will be investigated subsequent activity.

Evaluation of Unionized Propellant Xenon Atom in a Hall Thruster Plume
Unionized propellant xenon atom in a magnetic layer type Hall thruster plume was diagnosed by optical methods. To estimate the total xenon number density from previously measured meta-stable one, the Bolzmann, the corona and the KCD models were evaluated by emission spectroscopy. The measured xenon spectra show better agreement with the KCD model than the others. Also the electron temperature b...
متن کاملDevelopment of a Power Efficient, Restartable, "Green" Propellant Thruster for Small Spacecraft and Satellites
This paper details the development of an innovative "green" hybrid rocket propulsion system, applicable to small spacecraft. When fully developed this propulsion technology has the potential to act as a "drop in" replacement for propulsion system utilizing hazardous propellants such as hydrazine. Fuel grains are manufactured using a form of additive manufacturing known as Fused Deposition Model...
متن کاملGreen Propellant: A Study
The present study focuses simply on propellants which are environment friendly i.e. Green propellants. In Propulsion Systems, there are two ingredients burned together which are fuel & oxidizer and the resultant energy is used to propel the system. In composite solid rocket propellants, Ammonium perchlorate (AP) is being used extensively which has its own disadvantages i.e. HCl release during i...
متن کاملA Review of Hall Thruster Plume Modeling
Hall thrusters are an attractive form of electric propulsion that are being cleveloped to replace chemical systems for many on orbit propulsion tasks on communications satellites. A major concern in the use of these devices is the possible damage their plumes may cause to the host spacecraft. In this paper, the present status of computer modeling of Hall thruster plumes is reviewed in the conte...
متن کاملMicrocathode Thruster (μCT) Plume Characterization
An experimental observation of microcathode thruster plasma plume is described. An effect of the magnetic field on the plume expansion is considered. Two observation techniques are employed––charge-coupled-device camera and the concentric Langmuir probe. It is found that magnetic field significantly affects the plasma plume, and the strong magnetic field can lead to hollow plume formation.
